OK, You're Engaged - Now What?

One of the most annoying things about getting engaged is that IMMEDIATELY people start asking you "When's the wedding". Even if you got engaged 2 minutes ago. Seriously.

Getting engaged was so exciting and special that I hadn't actually thought about the practicalities of what it actually meant - that you had to plan a wedding. We got engaged on the afternoon of New Years Eve, December 31st 2008. We were actually hosting a New Years Eve party at our hotel room that night. So while we got a lot of wonderful and heartfelt congratulations at the party, we also got bombarded with questions about our upcoming wedding. We hadn't made any plans at all, having only been engaged for a few hours!

Unfortunately Nick and I were literally separated the day after our engagement for 2 weeks. He went to New Zealand to visit his family and I went to Hong Kong with my family. During that time we Skyped frequently and started to discuss wedding plans. I bought lots of wedding magazines and of course the first thing I did was start looking at dresses. I also started reading up on what we would need to do to have a wedding. It soon dawned on me that there was a LOT to do, and it was overwhelming trying to even think about where to start. So we decided to make at least one decision right now, one of the most important ones, and set a date.

One thing I knew straight away was that I needed at least a year to plan the wedding. My fiance and I also decided that we would like to have our wedding on the 13th, as we had gotten together on the 13th and almost always had something special or significant happen in our relationship on the 13th. A year away meant 13th December 2009. I was loathe to have a wedding in mid December as a lot of people would be busy and/or away due to Christmas and New Year. January was also out as people would be recovering from the holiday season both financially and physically. February was a possibility, but I didn't really want to have our wedding the day before Valentine's Day. So we decided on March 13th 2010.

So at least we were able to answer one of the questions we kept getting asked :). And it felt great to have taken a step towards our big day!
